The missile attacks by drones operated by the Central Intelligence Agency have generally been aimed in the past at foreign Qaeda and Taliban guerrillas from Afghanistan who take refuge in Pakistan between raids into their own country to fight American and NATO forces.

The CIA has a standing policy not to comment on reports of such missile strikes.

The latest attack came one day after government officials and Taliban militants appeared close to a deal on Sunday to end violence in Swat, another region of northern Pakistan.
